Why a run…
On December 24th, 2012, I invited friends and family to come out for a small 5K race. For the simple reason of just wanting to run. So we did, and we had a great time. A small group of twenty promised we would do it again next year.
Three days later I received a phone call that would forever change my life. My grandfather (Gerald Miller) suddenly passed away due to a heart attack. At that time I had no idea how the loss would impact me. I kept most of my feelings to myself, but I knew I would have to find a way to cope. I and other family members found running to be our outlet and a way to have time for reflection.
So, when it came time to plan for this year’s race we knew we wanted it to be reflective. A special event where friends and family could come together and celebrate the holiday season and the memories of our loved ones. Our first Christmas without our grandfather, great-grandfather, father, husband, brother, uncle, friend and neighbor will be hard, but coming together with others to remember all of our lost loved ones over the holiday season we hope will become a community event.
Lets gather, lets run, lets walk, lets eat and lets remember together. It will be almost one year since hundreds had gathered to say their good-byes to an amazing man. I can only hope on December 27th, 2014 hundreds can come together again to remember all the amazing men and women who are no longer with us.
It may be snowing, it probably will be cold, but I will be there and I hope you will too.
Lets Race to Remember.
